We are people – the primates of the highest caste – the kings of nature. At the same time (if ignoring the theories of creationism) we are the descendants of that one fish that got out from the ocean to the shore a couple of billion years ago, looked around and thought: “Hmm... lovely, one can live here too!” But just imagine: surely much less pretty fish might have been the first to creep out from water and settle on land, a little monstrosity, the image of absolute ugliness... And then (it is frightful just to think of it) we would look very differently now. Does it mean that evolution has neither a plan, nor an ultimate goal? Alas, for the time being everything looks just as if the evolution of life goes blindfold.
