Arbor mundi
The World Tree. This archetype is encountered in the most diverse mythological systems (James Cameron's film „Avatar” is no exception), symbolically defining their structure: the branches correspond with the sky, the trunk with the earthly world and the roots with the underworld. Thus, in the Sumerian version of the epic of Gilgamesh, a snake is entwined among the roots of a tree, a bird sits in the canopy but by the trunk stands Virgo. However, in the painting Virgo and the tree root are one and the same. Moreover, one of the birds is lying on its back. Why? The answer is only too obvious.
